How can fewer clicks actually sell more books?
New data shows AI search referrals converting up to 20 x higher than Google, with deeper engagement and faster purchase decisions. Here's why fewer clicks are leading to bigger payoffs, and what it means for publishers.

AI referrals are overtaking Google in their capacity to convert customers into buyers. This unprecedented shift in how customers discover and decide is well underway. Recent independent studies reveal how AI generative search engines are rapidly shaping a deeper engagement between customer and title. With conversion rates up to 20 x higher than Google’s, the data tells us a clear imperative; that optimising AI will enable publishers to reach audiences who are already ready to buy.
SuperPrompt’s comparative study on the conversion rates between Google and AI showcase a five times higher rate of traffic conversion.
And not just this. Analysing data pulled across ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity alongside Google Search, the study revealed that levels of engagement and speed to purchase was dramatically faster for AI users. While AI searchers used more specific prompts and queries than Google, the study resolves that AI users exhibit greater intent and more alike decision-ready buyers than the more casual browsing behaviour shown by Google visitors.
Ahrefs refines this advantage, quantifying such intuition. Once AI visited the site of the study in focus, they viewed 50% more pages per session and clicked on 75% fewer links. This behaviour indicates a deeper engagement with the site on arrival, with their attention less likely to wander elsewhere. A significant discovery on Arefs’ part, for now publishers can recognise the impact of AI in lucrative business terms.
So why exactly do AI visitors convert into buyers so well?
This can be put to intent depth. The prompts queried by AI users run to 12 words or more on average, while also being more frequently framed as full questions or scenarios. Instead of using keywords, AI searches display more specificity which conveys an eagerness to discover for purchase.
Conversion rates are also elicited through trust. Someone receiving an AI-generated answer seems to be read and received as a recommendation rather than a list of options to sift through. Clearly, it should be a priority for publishers to get their titles cited in that answer.
Speed accelerates the impact of such conversion. While Google requires people to explore a list of links, clicking through them one by one. AI collapses that whole journey into a single interaction, so the click count drops while the confidence to purchase increases.
These figures are hard to dismiss, they demand a shift in how publishers may configure their marketing through different search engines. If AI search traffic delivers more qualified leads, and a higher value than Google does, we must embrace Generative Engine Optimisation with open arms.
